The Tale of the Shepherd Boy

At the center of the mesmerizing rolling hills, lived a shepherd boy. His existence was pure, simple, and honest. His only responsibility was mainly to look after his flock of ewes.

Their low murmuring and the whispering of the wind across the solo tree on the peak were his only co-dwellers. Day after day, guarding his charges imbued in him a feeling of calm satisfaction.

But, there were at times moments of isolation, when the shepherd boy would long for fellowship. On one such day out of sheer tedium, the shepherd boy orchestrated a naughty plan.

Stories of wolves prowling on sheep had been heard times and again in the village. So, the boy opted to leveraged this fear and played a joke on the townsfolk.

One afternoon he ran into the village screaming “Wolf! There is a wolf attacking my sheep!” The scared villagers ran up the hills to help but saw no beast.

The boy laughed at the dilemma on their faces. This prank laughed for a couple of more days. But, one noon, a real wolf actually come to prey the herd. The shepherd boy raced for help, shouting “Wolf, Wolf!” But this more info time, no one responded.

Frustrated and alone, the boy fought against the wolf but managed to protect only few of his flock. Heartbroken, he went back to the village only to receive a scolding on honesty and the repercussions of dishonesty.

His tale of this shepherd boy has been handed down generations as a mediaeval parable for teaching the value of honesty, the consequences of lying and the risks of false alarms. Moreover, it highlights how trust once broken, is tough to earn back. It's a story as relevant today as it was anciently.
